  Early
19th century North Oxford houses can still be found among the later properties.
They include two and three storey terraced houses of a Georgian
character, some of local red brick, others with rendered
fronts ruled to give the impression of more expensive stonework. Some
early middle class villas survive, for example at 72 Woodstock Road and
89 Banbury Road. Park Town, built in
the 1850s, included detached, semi-detached and terraced houses in what
was by then an old-fashioned Italianate
style. The Crescent is elegantly
fronted with Bath stone while the slightly less grand houses in The Terrace
are of white brick with Portland cement facings on the ground floor. The
first houses built on the St. John's College Walton Manor estate, 121/123
Woodstock Road (1856) were Italianate
like Park Town and they were designed by the same architect, Samuel
Lipscomb Seckham. |
