The features and fittings
The houses were let unfurnished but they came with certain fittings as standard. The kitchen had a gas cooker, an enamel sink and wooden draining board and there were red quarry tiles on the floor. The living room, the bathroom and the hall, if there was one, were fitted with pine wood block flooring. The bedrooms had picture rails, as did the living room, and storage was provided by a shelf in the kitchen, an airing cupboard in the bathroom and two fitted cupboards on either side of the fireplace in the living room. This was made out of Welsh slate, painted to look like wood, and decorated with red and green tiles. The bathroom had a bath, washbasin and WC and fashionable nickel fittings, as did most speculative houses of the period.
The heating and plumbing and lighting
An open coal fire in the living room heated the ground floor, and upstairs there were gas fires in the bedrooms. The houses were connected to the mains and the central sewage system as was standard for new houses of this period. Hot water was heated by a gas copper in the kitchen and the bath water was heated by a back boiler behind the fire. There was an electric light in each room, but the house had few sockets.
