The plan of the houses (continued)
The new form of housing on the estate, maisonettes, had two or three bedrooms. The two bedroom maisonettes sit on top of each other in four storey blocks, while the larger three bedroom ones are placed above shops or small studio flats. Pressure on space in the flats and maisonettes meant that the bathroom and WC were usually in the same room. In both types of residence a balcony was provided. Unlike the estates built before the Second World War, some houses were built with garages, or with access to one that could be rented.
The houses and flats, new with all mod cons, must have been attractive to their first tenants who were probably moving in from cramped, ill equipped and more expensive lodgings elsewhere.
